Hauler Hero has picked up fresh funds as demand for its AI-powered waste management software continues to pile up.
The New York-based startup recently announced a successful $16 million Series A funding round, led by Frontier Growth, with participation from K5 Global and Somersault Ventures, among others. To date, Hauler Hero has raised over $27 million in venture capital.
Hauler Hero has developed a comprehensive software platform tailored for waste management companies. This all-in-one solution encompasses crucial functions such as customer relationship management (CRM), billing, and route optimization. In line with current trends in the tech industry, Hauler Hero is also pivoting towards integrating AI agents into its services.
Founded in 2020 by CEO Mark Hoadley and his brother-in-law Ben Sikma, Hauler Hero emerged from their frustrations with outdated software systems encountered during their work in mergers and acquisitions within the waste sector. Their objective was clear: modernize waste management with streamlined digital solutions.
Mark Hoadley emphasized the inefficiencies of existing systems, stating, “All of the existing software in the space, they were clunky, old. Sometimes we’d talk about how this one reminds us of the Oregon Trail, this reminds us of the cell phone Michael Douglas used in ‘Wall Street.’ They’re very clunky and antiquated.”
The success of Hauler Hero is evident from the numbers; since its inception, the platform has reportedly facilitated 35 million trash pickups. The company’s growth trajectory is impressive, with Hoadley mentioning that they have doubled their headcount, revenue, and customer base since their seed round announcement in late 2024.
Since that initial funding, Hauler Hero has been busy enhancing its platform. One significant new feature collects images from third-party cameras equipped on garbage trucks, transmitting this data directly to a centralized software command center. This advancement allows waste management companies to confirm pickups, validate billing, and maintain better oversight of their fleets.

While some sanitation workers and their unions have reservations about this tech overhaul, Hoadley reassured that most unions restrict the use of footage in disciplinary actions. In fact, the recorded images can help reduce liability for drivers involved in accidents or those accused of failing to complete pickups.
“Think of it as like running a factory with no roof and no visibility into what’s happening in that factory,” Hoadley noted. “If you don’t have visibility into what’s happening out there, it’s very hard to have quality control. And the quality control in this case is what was out there, was it picked up?”
A Trio of AI Agents
Hauler Hero is also developing a suite of three AI agents to further enhance their offering. Hero Vision focuses on automatically identifying service issues and revenue opportunities. Hero Chat serves as a chatbot designed for customer inquiries, while Hero Route utilizes real-time route data to optimize routes for increased efficiency.
Hoadley explained, “There’s an enormous amount of data in our system about pickups, work orders, billing information, and if you give these agents an understanding of your data model, you can just go tell them, hey, go build me a chart.” This capability aims to empower waste management companies by making data-driven decisions easier.
Hauler Hero intends to allocate part of its recent funding toward the commercialization of these AI agents, as well as expanding services for municipal entities, a rapidly growing sector of their customer base.
Interestingly, the move to engage with public entities arose organically as demand from municipalities increased. Hoadley shared, “It wasn’t something that I necessarily thought was going to be part of this journey. It kind of came organically as many things do.”
With Routeware and Wastech merging in 2024, Hoadley believes this consolidation has narrowed the options for public agencies seeking providers, thus contributing to Hauler Hero’s growing traction in the municipal market.
Looking ahead, Hoadley emphasized that the focus remains on refining and scaling their product offerings, with potential new features on the horizon. He stated, “We’re going to continue to chart the course for the next decade of being at the cutting edge of delivering value for customers, leveraging all the latest tools.” With an exciting roadmap ahead, Hauler Hero is poised to redefine waste management in the tech landscape.
