The Impact of AI Tools on Employment: A Sociologist’s Perspective

Understanding AI’s Role in Job Dynamics

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT have garnered immense attention, sparking debates about their impact on the job market. As a sociologist studying this transformative technology, I sought empirical insights to clarify whether AI eliminates jobs, creates new ones, or results in a hybrid of both effects. To explore this question, I commissioned a survey with YouGov, which gathered feedback from 1,250 U.S. workers between July 30 and August 4, 2026.

The survey aimed to capture workers’ current use of AI, their perceptions of its future impact on job availability, and how they believe it has affected their job situations so far. This data serves as the cornerstone of an ongoing study, which, although not yet peer-reviewed, offers valuable insights into the unfolding relationship between AI and employment.

Current Experiences with AI in the Workplace

Four years after the introduction of ChatGPT in November 2022, my survey revealed that AI’s influence on the job landscape has yet to lead to significant losses or gains for workers. Surprisingly, just about 3% of respondents reported losing a job due to AI-driven automation, while approximately 6% indicated they had secured positions that were previously nonexistent due to AI technologies. Additionally, around 9% claimed advancements or promotions tied to their proficiency with AI tools.

These findings challenge both the pessimistic and optimistic predictions surrounding AI’s impact on employment. It’s noteworthy that only a small fraction of surveyed individuals reported experiencing job losses attributable to AI—a statistic that may defy many expectations.

Survey Insights: A Closer Look

The YouGov survey was crafted to reflect a broad demographic of employed U.S. adults, encompassing various ages, genders, races, and educational backgrounds. The 25-question format included pivotal inquiries about AI’s potential role in recent job dynamics:

  1. Job Loss Due to AI: Since 2023, have you lost a job because AI automated tasks you previously performed?
  2. Creation of New Positions: Since 2023, did you land a job that was created as a result of AI integration?
  3. Promotions Associated with AI Skills: Have you received a promotion or advancement tied to your AI competencies?

Interestingly, around 95% of respondents answered “no” to the first question, while 90% indicated they had not transitioned into newly created positions. Similarly, 88% reported no promotions directly linked to AI skills. The “not sure” responses ranged between 3% and 4%, but the overwhelming majority maintained that AI had not significantly altered their employment status.

The Limited Impact of AI Thus Far

These findings align with observations from various researchers indicating that AI has not yet made seismic shifts in the labor market. In the U.S., job changes remain relatively infrequent, which places the reported AI-related transitions in a broader context. The substantial number of workers indicating no significant changes suggests an ongoing period of adjustment in which AI tools are gradually being assimilated into existing workflows rather than spearheading widespread changes.

One of the key takeaways from the survey is that while AI has not led to mass layoffs, it appears to promote certain individuals based on their newly acquired technological skills. This raises interesting questions about long-term career trajectories. Will the promotion opportunities linked to AI proficiency endure, or will the advent of more advanced AI, capable of operating autonomously, diminish the value of these skills over time?

The Complexity of AI’s Impact on Employment

It is essential to interpret these survey results with caution. The data offers a snapshot of current attitudes and experiences, but causality remains complicated. Workers may struggle to discern whether their job changes stem from AI advancements or other economic factors. For instance, in July 2026, the official unemployment rate was 4.1%, but reports indicated that AI was a leading cause for some workforce reductions.

Participants in the survey, while reflective of the general population, are not without biases. They chose to engage with YouGov’s online panel, possibly leading to perspectives that are not universally applicable. Notably, all respondents were employed, which may skew their perceptions relative to those who have faced unemployment.

Moving Beyond Predictions: Workers’ Perspectives

This research goes beyond speculative predictions made by economists or analyses from AI companies focused solely on job loss. By engaging directly with workers, my study underscores their lived experiences—assessing not only job losses but also potential gains and promotions associated with AI.

Questions still loom regarding how different demographics experience AI at work. Who is receiving these promotions, and how exactly are workers leveraging AI in their roles? How do they foresee AI affecting their job prospects in the years to come? These inquiries represent the next frontier for my ongoing study, aimed at shedding light on the evolving landscape of work in an AI-driven world.

By providing empirical insights into the relationship between AI technologies and employment, this research strives to contribute valuable knowledge amid an increasingly complex and dynamic employment environment.
