OpenAI’s GPT-5 Rollout: Challenges and Insights from Sam Altman

OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman has openly discussed the turbulence surrounding the launch of GPT-5—the latest and most advanced iteration of OpenAI’s large language models (LLMs). This rollout has not been as seamless as the company had anticipated, prompting a series of significant admissions and operational adjustments.

Acknowledging Launch Problems

In a candid Reddit AMA and a follow-up on X, Altman addressed a variety of issues that accompanied GPT-5’s rollout. The problems ranged from faulty model switching to user confusion, which ultimately led OpenAI to restore access to previous models, including GPT-4o. "It was a little more bumpy than we hoped for," Altman noted in response to user inquiries about the rollout.

Performance Hiccups and Model Confusion

One of the more troubling aspects was the mix-up concerning model performance charts presented during the livestream. According to Altman, “people were working late and very tired,” which contributed to errors during this high-stakes presentation. While the accompanying blog post was accurate, the confusion stemming from human error reflected poorly on the launch.

Problems with the Automatic Model Router

A significant source of friction came from OpenAI’s new automatic model router. This system was supposed to intelligently assign user prompts to one of four variants of GPT-5: regular, mini, nano, and pro, including an option for a "thinking" mode designed for more complex reasoning tasks.

Altman confirmed that a vital feature—the autoswitcher—was temporarily out of service, leading many to perceive GPT-5 as underperforming or "way dumber" than it should have been. He mentioned that OpenAI is now committed to adjusting the decision-making processes of the model and improving user transparency regarding which variant is responding to any given query.

User Experience Adjustments

Many users, especially those who were OpenAI beta testers, expressed frustration over the sudden upgrade to GPT-5. The lack of access to older models, which many preferred, left users feeling bewildered and dissatisfied. OpenAI’s response has been to allow ChatGPT Plus users to continue utilizing GPT-4o while they gather data on user preferences and experiences with the new model.

Real-World Performance vs. Expectations

Despite OpenAI’s internal benchmarks indicating that GPT-5 holds a competitive edge over other LLMs, real-world applications tell a different story. Users have surfaced numerous examples of GPT-5’s shortcomings, including critical errors in math, logic, and programming tasks. For instance, data scientist Colin Fraser highlighted instances where GPT-5 failed to solve simple algebraic problems or made fundamental errors in basic arithmetic.

Developers have also reported that, in certain programming tasks, GPT-5 delivered poorer performance compared to rival models like Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.1. Furthermore, security firm SPLX indicated that GPT-5 still suffers from vulnerabilities—specifically in prompt injection and logic obfuscation threats—unless mitigated by stronger safety layers.

OpenAI Under the Spotlight

With over 700 million weekly users on ChatGPT, OpenAI commands a dominant position in the generative AI landscape. However, as Altman noted, the spike in API traffic—doubling within just 24 hours post-launch—contributed significantly to platform instability. In light of these challenges, OpenAI has pledged to double rate limits for ChatGPT Plus users, amongst other infrastructural improvements.

Yet, the early missteps of this launch have opened an avenue for competitors to make significant gains in market share. The pressure is mounting for OpenAI to showcase that GPT-5 is not merely an incremental improvement but an authentic leap forward in capabilities.

Moving Forward

Despite the rocky launch, OpenAI aims to implement ongoing adjustments to enhance reliability and user satisfaction. Altman’s transparency about the company’s challenges indicates a willingness to evolve based on user feedback and performance data. Users await further developments with cautious optimism, hoping that OpenAI can deliver on the high expectations set during the GPT-5 introductory phase.
