According to a new nationwide study by Confused.com Life Insurance, an impressive three in five Brits now utilize AI to self-diagnose health conditions. This trend is evident as individuals seek information on side effects, treatment options, and symptom checks. Remarkably, up to 11% of respondents have reported that AI has facilitated improvements in their health conditions. With over a third (35%) expressing a likelihood of using AI for self-diagnosis in the future, there’s a clear shift away from traditional GP appointments, which are becoming increasingly challenging to secure at short notice.
In the UK, the average waiting time for a GP appointment currently stands at 10 days—an interval deemed too lengthy for many folks in need of timely medical advice. The result? A significant uptick in health-related online queries since January 2025. Searches including “what is my illness?” have surged by 85%, while inquiries about “what are the symptoms for?” and “side effects” have risen by 33% and 22%, respectively.
Most Common Health-Related Queries with AI
Insights from Confused.com reveal that the most sought-after health-related inquiry involves symptom checks, with 63% of users seeking AI-driven advice in this area. Following closely are inquiries about side effects (50%) and various lifestyle and well-being techniques (38%). Notably, 20% of respondents have turned to AI for mental health support, utilizing platforms like ChatGPT as their virtual therapist.
Demographic patterns are intriguing: 35% of those aged over 65 engage with AI for self-diagnosis, with 54% checking their symptoms this way. In stark contrast, a whopping 85% of 18-24-year-olds utilize AI for regular health-related searches.
Tom Vaughan, a life insurance expert at Confused.com, emphasizes this transformative trend, stating, “Advances in AI technology have created a new way for people to approach healthcare and self-diagnosis. More individuals are taking steps to support their own and their family’s well-being, getting ahead of health concerns and addressing situations as quickly as possible.”
AI Self-Diagnosis Potential Benefits
Given the extended GP waiting times that can sometimes span a month, it’s no surprise that 42% of respondents believe AI offers a quicker alternative than waiting for a doctor’s appointment. Among younger demographics, 50% of 25-34-year-olds and 51% of 35-44-year-olds feel strongly that self-diagnosis via AI provides a swifter response than traditional healthcare channels.
Family health also remains a pivotal concern, with 20% of individuals exploring AI options to ascertain the best methods for supporting their loved ones’ well-being. Notably, 24% expressed feeling more comfortable using AI rather than facing a healthcare professional directly, a sentiment that escalates to 39% among 18-24-year-olds.
In addition, 17% of users are seeking alternative medical solutions through AI, peaking at 27% for those aged 25-34. Financial considerations also play a crucial role, as 20% believe that self-diagnosis through AI could save them significant amounts in private healthcare fees. The technology holds particular promise for non-binary individuals, with 75% reporting substantial help from AI in terms of health diagnosis, versus just 13% for men and 9% for women.
Overall, user experiences indicate a notable positive impact on health conditions due to AI. For instance, 11% stated that AI has significantly improved their health situations, while 41% remarked that it has helped somewhat. Encouragingly, this self-diagnosis trend, while not a guarantee of accuracy, has the potential to prompt individuals to visit their GP for a formal diagnosis.
Contrastingly, a small minority of respondents (9%) feel that AI has had no beneficial impact on their health, suggesting that some still hold fast to the reliability of traditional healthcare methods.
Vaughan underscores the need for professional healthcare consultations, stating, “While AI can be useful for initial research and gaining an understanding of a condition, it’s clear that for the ultimate peace of mind people should consult a GP or pharmacist. GPs and other medical professionals are the only individuals qualified to accurately diagnose conditions, some of which may worsen or develop into long-term health issues without proper intervention.”
OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health
The findings from Confused.com align with OpenAI’s recent launch of its ChatGPT Health feature, designed to address the overwhelming number of health-related inquiries on the platform, which reportedly exceeds 230 million weekly searches. This innovative feature allows users to connect their personal medical records and wellness apps like Apple Health, enabling AI to furnish tailored responses rather than generic information.
While ChatGPT Health aims to assist users in navigating their health queries, OpenAI has made it clear that this feature is not intended as a diagnostic tool nor a replacement for professional medical care. It is developed to support users in understanding lab results and tracking wellness, rather than to provide formal diagnoses or treatment plans.
Designed with feedback from hundreds of physicians worldwide, ChatGPT Health emphasizes safety and clarity for users. Despite not being a substitute for traditional medical consultation, the growing inclination towards AI for health information and the understanding of medical issues signals a significant shift in patient care dynamics and poses critical questions about clinical trust and patient safety.
