OpenAI made waves this Tuesday with the launch of Study Mode, an innovative feature within ChatGPT. Designed to enhance critical thinking among students, Study Mode encourages learners to engage deeply with material rather than merely seeking quick answers. With this new functionality, ChatGPT poses probing questions to test users’ understanding, and often refrains from providing straightforward answers unless students demonstrate critical engagement.
Rolling out to logged-in users across all ChatGPT plans—including Free, Plus, Pro, and Team—Study Mode’s introduction marks a significant move by OpenAI. The company anticipates extending this feature to its Edu subscribers in the coming weeks, primarily aimed at young learners whose educational institutions have implemented group plans for student access.
This development comes as a response to the millions of students incorporating ChatGPT into their study routines. Previous studies highlighted the dual-edged nature of AI tools like ChatGPT: while they can function as effective tutors, they may also undermine the critical thinking abilities that are essential for academic success. A recent research paper cited that students utilizing ChatGPT for essay writing exhibited lower brain activity levels when compared to those who relied on traditional search engines or did not use any assistance at all.
The initial release of ChatGPT in 2022 stirred a wave of concern among educators, leading to numerous generative AI bans across various American school districts. However, by 2023, many schools began to lift these bans, coming to terms with the reality that ChatGPT would play a fundamental role in students’ academic lives moving forward.
With the launch of Study Mode, OpenAI aims to transform ChatGPT from a mere answer-providing engine into a comprehensive educational tool that fosters learning. Notably, Anthropic also introduced a similar feature for its AI chatbot, Claude, called Learning Mode back in April.
Despite its potential benefits, Study Mode comes with limitations. Students have the option to switch back to regular mode if they seek straightforward answers, which raises questions about the feature’s overall effectiveness. Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s VP of Education, explained in a briefing with TechCrunch that the company isn’t currently offering locking mechanisms for parents or educators to enforce Study Mode usage. However, she did highlight the potential for future explorations of such administrative or parental controls.
Ultimately, the success of Study Mode depends on the willingness of students to engage with it genuinely. This means that use of Study Mode necessitates a student’s desire for deeper understanding rather than simply completing their assignments as quickly as possible.
