Google Introduces AI-Powered Business Calls in the US
Google has recently unveiled an innovative feature that allows users across the United States to contact local businesses using AI technology. This groundbreaking enhancement, available in Google Search, enables individuals to inquire about pricing or availability details without the need for a traditional phone call.
How It Works
Initially tested in January, this new feature is tailored for specific types of businesses, including pet groomers, dry cleaners, and auto repair shops. When a user searches for one of these services, Google now displays a prompt reading “have AI check pricing” right beneath the business listing. This streamlined process is designed to make accessing crucial information more user-friendly, especially for those who may find phone calls daunting.
Once a user clicks the prompt, Google engages them by asking for additional details related to their request. This includes queries about pet breed and service preferences for pet groomers or the specific auto services needed. It also prompts users to specify their desired time frames and preferred methods of receiving updates, such as via email or text message. With these user-friendly steps, Google aims to provide a seamless experience, particularly for younger demographics who may struggle with direct conversations over the phone.
Leveraging AI Technology
Robby Stein, Google Search’s Vice President of Product, elaborated on the mechanics behind this feature, revealing that Google employs its Duplex model, enhanced with the advanced Gemini technology. The AI, powered by Gemini, will directly communicate with the business on behalf of the user. Importantly, the AI will identify itself as such: “an AI from Google trying to get information on behalf of a customer,” ensuring transparency in the communication process.
Once the AI gathers the required details, it promptly relays the information back to users via text, covering aspects like available appointment times and pricing. This capability is particularly beneficial for those who prefer not to engage in direct phone conversations.
Business Owner Participation
For business owners, participation in this AI calling feature is not mandatory. They can easily opt out in their Google profile settings if they prefer not to engage with AI-driven calls. While the feature is now generally available, businesses subscribed to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra will enjoy certain privileges, including “higher limits” on using this service.
Advancements in AI Technology
In tandem with the rollout of its AI-powered calling feature, Google is also testing its more sophisticated Gemini 2.5 Pro in AI Mode. This advanced AI search tool, which became widely accessible in the US in May, offers enhanced functionalities to users. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra who have opted into the AI Mode experiment can benefit significantly from these new capabilities, which excel in complex reasoning, mathematical tasks, and programming code analysis.
Future Developments: Deep Search Feature
Google is not stopping there. The tech giant is experimenting with integrating its Deep Search feature into AI Mode. This allows the AI to generate in-depth reports based on user queries. Stein indicates that the model engages in multi-step reasoning, posing further questions and refining its responses, thereby enhancing the overall search experience.
This innovative development signals Google’s commitment to transforming the way users interact with local businesses and access information. By leveraging AI, the company aims to streamline communication, making it quicker and more efficient for users and businesses alike. With the evolution of AI technologies, we can anticipate even more user-centric enhancements in the future, redefining our digital interaction landscape.
