Discovering Vanguard: The First New Subsea Habitat in Nearly 40 Years

In the waters of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, a remarkable milestone for marine exploration is set to unfold: the launch of Vanguard, the world’s first new subsea habitat in nearly four decades. Once operational, this groundbreaking habitat will allow teams of scientists to live and work beneath the ocean’s surface, providing unprecedented opportunities for research and discovery in our oceanic environments.

What is Vanguard?

Vanguard is designed to facilitate extended underwater living, supporting missions that include reef restoration, species surveys, underwater archaeology, and even astronaut training. With a crew capacity for four scientists, each mission will enable aquanauts to spend an entire week exploring the mysteries of the ocean.

One unique feature of Vanguard is its “wet porch,” which includes a moon pool—a permanent opening in the floor. This innovative design maintains air pressure inside the habitat, allowing divers to enter and exit without flooding the space. This pressurized environment serves not only as a shelter but also as a game changer for divers.

The Science of Pressurization

Typically, scuba divers operating at shallower depths, such as 50 meters, face the risk of decompression sickness—commonly known as the bends—if they ascend too quickly. This condition can be severe and even fatal. However, Vanguard’s pressurization mimics the water around it, drastically changing how divers experience their missions. Instead of needing multiple short dives with lengthy stops to avoid the bends, divers within Vanguard can dive for hours on end without frequent decompression stops, allowing for far more exploration and data collection.

Kristen Tertoole, Chief Operating Officer of Deep (the company behind Vanguard), highlights the immense potential for scientific advancement: “More time in the ocean opens a world of possibility, accelerating discoveries, inspiration, solutions.” This forward-thinking approach emphasizes just how crucial it is to expand our understanding of the ocean, which covers 95% of our planet and remains largely unexplored.

The Technology Behind Vanguard

Vanguard incorporates advanced technology that sets it apart from earlier subsea habitats. Equipped with a tethered connection to a buoy on the surface—termed the “surface expression”—the habitat can access fresh air and water. It also features a diesel generator that powers a Starlink internet connection, facilitating real-time communication and data transfer with teams on land.

Moreover, DNV, an independent classification agency, has inspected Vanguard. This classification is a first for subsea habitats, ensuring stringent safety protocols and structural integrity under expected extreme weather conditions. According to Patrick Lahey, founder of Triton Submarines, the classification means Vanguard is built to exceptionally high safety standards, capable of supporting its crew for at least 72 hours in an emergency.

The Vision for the Future: Project Sentinel

While Vanguard will serve as a revolutionary platform for ongoing marine research, it is primarily designed to test and validate technologies that will contribute to DEEP’s ambitious future project: Sentinel. Planned as an advanced modular subsea habitat, Sentinel will be significantly larger at six meters in diameter, complete with elegant staircases and private cabins for crew members.

Expecting a small crew of eight, Sentinel’s design aims to create a dynamic living and research environment similar to the International Space Station. The larger configuration could house up to 50 people, descending to depths of 225 meters. DEEP plans to roll out Sentinel in 2027, promising a new era of ocean exploration that could radically transform our understanding of marine science.
