The Download: Navigating the World of Tech
This is today’s edition of The Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what’s going on in the world of technology.
LLMs Are Stuck in a Groupthink Groove. This Startup Is Trying to Get Them Out.
Open up your favorite chatbot—be it Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini—and simply request, “Give me a random number between 1 and 10.” More often than not, the answer will be 7. Almost every time.
Now, if this uncanny coincidence has left you scratching your head, fear not—I assure you I possess no mystical abilities. The reality is that many large language models (LLMs) are caught in a predictable loop. While this consistency might be handy for certain tasks, it becomes problematic when we seek creativity—like brainstorming ideas for a vacation.
This is where the Australian startup, Springboards, steps in. Their innovative LLM, Flint, has been specifically designed to circumvent the problem of groupthink. Unlike mainstream LLMs, Flint can generate a more diverse array of responses, especially to open-ended inquiries like “Where should I go in Europe?” This distinctive approach positions them as pioneers in steering chatbots away from generic answers.
