The two primary AI tools under scrutiny are the Asylum Case Summarisation (ACS) and Asylum Policy Search (APS). A particular concern has emerged regarding the accuracy of summaries generated by the ACS. ORG’s findings suggest the error percentage for these AI-generated summaries far exceeds the publicly stated 9% error rate, particularly due to instances of factual inaccuracies and misrepresentations. As for the APS, the lack of established quality control protocols raises further questions about its reliability.
In a notable incident from July, a UK judge criticized the Home Office for referencing an “AI hallucinated” document in a case where a Moroccan woman and her child had their asylum claim denied. The judge contended that this flawed evidence improperly implied that returning to Morocco would be safe for them, emphasizing the dire stakes involved in the AI’s assistance in these proceedings.
The ongoing dialogue surrounding the integration of AI tools in asylum processes in the UK raises critical issues about transparency and accountability.
