Climate modeling has taken a giant leap forward with the introduction of HiRO-ACEv2, the latest update to the High Resolution Output Ai2 Climate Emulator (HiRO-ACE) system. This advanced emulation technology enables researchers to replicate an incredibly broad range of weather phenomena with exceptional accuracy at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional high-resolution models.
HiRO-ACEv2 expands its capabilities by introducing a revolutionary downscaling model, HiROv2, which can now predict multiple high-resolution fields simultaneously. This marks a significant improvement in our ability to capture extreme weather events, such as intense rainfall, high winds, and unusual pressure dynamics, making it an invaluable tool for climate researchers and meteorologists worldwide.
The foundation of HiRO-ACE lies in its two-part system: ACE, which operates at a coarser resolution of 100 km, and HiRO, which enhances those outputs to provide fine-scale details at a 3 km resolution. The enhancements seen in HiRO-ACEv2, particularly the upgraded HiROv2 model, enable it to more accurately reproduce extreme weather statistics, tracking even the rarest events that occur once in a million data points.
For example, when trained with coarsened data from the X-SHiELD model, HiROv2 can match high-resolution statistics to within 3%. This capability extends to estimating tropical cyclone energy accurately, even for storms not included in its training dataset. The model has shown proficiency in generating well-structured hurricanes, featuring realistic eyes and rain bands—although some optimization around wind fields remains necessary.
The ACE component, now updated for this system, also exhibits remarkable reliability. Over a decade of simulation, the hurricanes, climate patterns, and statistical distributions of wind, rain, and pressure are closely aligned with those generated by X-SHiELD. This evidence further cements ACE as a credible source for long-term high-resolution climate data.
HiRO-ACEv2 enables researchers to produce comprehensive annual datasets of global 3 km resolution, offering statistics that closely resemble those from X-SHiELD—even when HiRO operates from simulated data rather than direct inputs. Notably, the energy outputs from hurricanes generated via HiRO-ACEv2 are comparable to those derived from X-SHiELD over the same period, with visual evidence showing a diverse array of extreme weather events.

One of the standout features of HiRO-ACEv2 is its cost-effectiveness. Generating high-resolution global weather data with this system is approximately 300 times less expensive than using X-SHiELD. When focusing on specific regions, these savings can increase to over a hundredfold, making HiRO-ACEv2 an exceptionally attractive option for various climate research applications.
Future Developments
While HiRO-ACEv2 is a groundbreaking advancement, there are still opportunities for enhancement. Currently, HiRO operates exclusively with the ACE data tuned to match X-SHiELD outputs. This limitation means that it can’t yet produce high-resolution data for alternative climates, such as future warmer scenarios or historical datasets like ERA5. Future developments aim to incorporate new datasets from X-SHiELD, including those simulating a world 4°C warmer, alongside additional parameters like near-surface temperature, snow, and ice outputs. These upgrades will diversify its range of applications, such as snowpack predictions.
Visualizing and Using HiRO Outputs

A simulated storm over the northeastern Pacific in the ACE data visualizer. The main map shows 10 m wind speed at 100 km resolution; the 3 km HiRO-ACEv2 inset shows finer structure within the storm.
To facilitate easy access to HiRO outputs without requiring extensive computational resources, a web demo has been created. This platform presents pre-generated precipitation, wind, and sea-level pressure outputs from both HiROv1 and HiROv2, allowing users to visually compare them with the X-SHiELD model. This visual comparison provides an intuitive way to assess performance across different regions of interest and complements the quantitative measures outlined in our technical report.
For users desiring a deeper level of engagement, the models can be downloaded for direct use, and comprehensive tutorial notebooks offer step-by-step guidance for running simulations. This resource-rich setup empowers researchers and enthusiasts alike to tap into the insights provided by HiRO-ACEv2 without extensive hindrance.
