The Trusted Contact feature allows adult users of ChatGPT to designate a friend, family member, or caregiver as a “Trusted Contact.” This person will be notified if OpenAI’s systems detect discussions related to self-harm or suicidal ideation within the chatbot. Enabling the Trusted Contact feature is simple. Users who are at least 18 years old globally, or 19 in South Korea, can access the option through their ChatGPT account settings. By entering the contact details of a chosen individual, users can invite them to become a Trusted Contact. It’s important to note that the designated person must accept the invitation within a week. Users retain control over their settings; they can remove or edit their chosen contact whenever they wish. Conversely, the Trusted Contact has the autonomy to opt out at any time.

OpenAI emphasizes the privacy of the interaction in this process. The notifications sent to the Trusted Contact will be “intentionally limited,” meaning that no specific details or transcripts from the user’s conversations will be shared. If a conversation triggers a safety alert, ChatGPT will suggest that the user reach out to their Trusted Contact for support, informing them that the contact may be notified. A specialized team will review such cases to determine if a notification is warranted, which can be delivered via email, text message, or an in-app notification.
