SpaceX, Elon Musk’s pioneering space company that is also the home of his artificial intelligence venture, xAI, is contemplating a substantial investment of $55 billion to establish a semiconductor factory in Grimes County, Texas. This was revealed through a recent proposal on the county’s official website.
The proposed project could eventually see a total investment of up to $119 billion. It is envisioned as a “multi-phase, next-generation, vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing fabrication facility.” The ambition behind this initiative highlights Musk’s commitment to advancing technology across various sectors.
Referred to as “Terafab,” this project aims not only to bolster SpaceX’s capabilities but also to incorporate support from Tesla. The collaboration will involve industry titan Intel, focusing on developing chips that cater to a plethora of uses—from AI servers to satellites, and from SpaceX’s proposed data center in space to the autonomous Tesla vehicles and robotics that are on the cutting edge of innovation.
Musk envisions that the manufacturing facility will eventually be capable of producing enough chips to generate 1 terawatt of power annually. This ambitious goal stems from his assertion that current semiconductor manufacturers are unable to keep pace with the semiconductor demands required for both AI and robotics applications. In his own words: “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab.” His determination reflects an underlying urgency in addressing the growing tech needs of his companies.
Despite the proposal pointing to Grimes County, Texas, it’s worth noting that Musk indicated in a recent tweet that this site is just one among several potential locations being evaluated for the new factory.
