After spending 14 years developing cutting-edge technologies within semiconductor powerhouse Intel, RealSense is embarking on an exhilarating journey as an independent entity. Understanding RealSense Technology

RealSense specializes in cameras equipped with stereoscopic imaging technology, which captures two images of the same object from different angles. By merging these images—with the added dimension of infrared light—RealSense creates a depth map that enables machines to perceive their physical environment more accurately. In a recent conversation with TechCrunch, CEO Nadav Orbach highlighted the foundational principle behind RealSense’s technology: “The common denominator of all of them is they live in the real, physical world,” Orbach explained. "They need to understand the surroundings in 3D and based on that, take and plan actions right in the world." This focus on real-time, high-accuracy 3D perception underpins everything that RealSense strives to achieve.

Orbach’s tenure at Intel included roles as a CPU architect and later as a general manager overseeing incubation and disruptive innovation. His rich experience has guided RealSense as it transitions into an independent company focused on enhancing its 3D perception capabilities.

A Rich History of Innovation

As RealSense moved toward independence, Orbach reflected on the early days of the technology. “We knew and understood that 3D perception was going to be big,” he remarked, acknowledging the uncertainty about its primary applications at first. The team explored various markets, from gesture recognition on computers and phones to finding a niche primarily in robotics as demand grew.

However, RealSense’s reach extends beyond robotics. Industries as varied as aquaculture and food services have leveraged RealSense’s technology. For instance, fish farms utilize its cameras for monitoring underwater volume, while Chipotle partnered with AI software company PreciTaste to optimize inventory management in their kitchens.

Growth Driven by AI and Robotics Interest

The past few years have witnessed a remarkable surge in interest surrounding RealSense’s technology, particularly fueled by advancements in artificial intelligence. With over 3,000 customers on board, the company has capitalized on the expanding applications for robotics, facilitating deeper interactions and enhanced functionalities.

RealSense’s decision to spin out from Intel was motivated by a desire to keep pace with this growing demand. According to Orbach, “We realized it may be easier to scale if we raised our own capital.” This transition received high-level support from former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, and RealSense successfully raised $50 million in a Series A funding round from Intel Capital and various strategic investors.

Nasdaq Orbach’s New Journey as CEO

Transitioning to the role of a first-time CEO is both thrilling and daunting. Orbach expressed how the experience of raising funds was humbling yet energizing: “For me, it was exciting, to be honest. I was on the other side of the table.” This newfound responsibility comes with a promising vision to develop RealSense’s marketing strategies and push technological advancements.

Future Goals and Aspirations

With the fresh capital from its funding round, RealSense plans to focus on enhancing its go-to-market team and evolving its technology. The objective is not just to improve functionalities but also prioritize safety in human-robot interactions and streamline access control procedures.

“There is a learning curve of, you know, stepping out,” Orbach said, reflecting on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. With a supportive and skilled team, he is optimistic about RealSense’s ability to innovate and thrive in its new adventure. “I think we have the right mix for success,” he concluded, portraying an inspiring vision for the company’s future.

As RealSense ventures into a new phase of growth and innovation, its capabilities in 3D perception technology promise to reshape industries and facilitate remarkable advancements in robotics and automation.
