Huawei’s ecosystem reveals significant progress, boasting around eight million registered developers and over 30,000 applications and “atomic services.” These lightweight programs run without installation, which enhances the user experience by providing instant access to features and services.

During a recent developer conference, Richard Yu Chengdong, the chairman of Huawei’s consumer business group, candidly acknowledged the competitive landscape. While HarmonyOS is still trailing behind Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android in global market reach and app support, Yu pointed out an interesting metric: the top 5,000 apps account for a staggering 99.9% of consumer time on Huawei devices. This insight highlights the company’s focus on essential applications rather than sheer quantity, indicating a mature understanding of what constitutes ecosystem success.

Pangu AI Models: Targeting Industrial Use Cases

Huawei isn’t just focusing on consumer devices; their introduction of Pangu 5.5 represents a larger ambition in enterprise and industrial applications. With 718 billion parameters in its natural language processing model and 15 billion parameters in its computer vision model, Pangu 5.5 is poised to compete effectively in the burgeoning AI landscape.

These advancements target diverse sectors—medicine, finance, governance, manufacturing, and automotive—indicating Huawei’s strategy to solidify its position in enterprise markets while navigating constraints in the consumer space due to geopolitical pressures. The integration of these AI models with HarmonyOS 6 offers an innovative, vertically integrated stack enabling optimized performance across devices.

Momentum in the Smartphone Market

Recent figures from consultancy Canalys reveal that Huawei has shipped over 103 million smartphones and 21 million tablets powered by HarmonyOS. Notably, nearly half of these shipments occurred in 2024, signaling a robust acceleration in platform adoption within China’s domestic market. This momentum suggests a growing acceptance of HarmonyOS as a viable alternative to more established operating systems.

In a push to create a cohesive ecosystem, Huawei has recently expanded HarmonyOS to laptops, aiming to replicate the seamless experience associated with Apple’s ecosystem. Nonetheless, executing a unified software strategy across a range of hardware types comes with its unique set of challenges—both technical and logistical.
