This was the landscape in which I found myself when I moved to Lake Tahoe in 2006.

Upon my arrival in Tahoe, I quickly realized that the locals held a deep skepticism toward the weather forecasts. The prevailing attitude was somewhat reminiscent of “We’ll believe it when we see it.” In contrast to meteorologists stationed in flat regions, who could merely check weather models and relay the news with an air of confidence, those forecasting for mountainous terrains faced a unique challenge.
In cities like Sacramento and Reno, the focus often didn’t extend beyond a cursory glance at snow levels. “We’ll see three feet above 6,000 feet,” they’d say, and swiftly move on to the next topic—a far cry from the specifics that skiers yearned for. Questions about wind conditions or snow quality at peak elevations were rarely addressed, prompting me to consider how I could offer something fresh and invaluable.
A New Path: Balancing Work and Passion
At that point, I found myself balancing an office job at a resort while pursuing weather forecasts on the side. My mornings began at 4 a.m., diving into the intricacies of mountain weather patterns before heading off to my nine-to-five. I was driven by a singular question: How do these storms interact with the unique topography of Tahoe?
I set about emailing my observations to my coworkers, and to my surprise, people wanted to be added to my forecasts. As word spread, local resorts began to approach me, eager to incorporate my detailed weather data into their operations. It became clear that I was filling a gap that had long been overlooked.
Harnessing the Power of Weather Models
When it came to actual forecasting, I relied on an extensive array of data sources, including the NOAA, GFS (Global Forecasting System), and various international models from Germany, Japan, and elsewhere. These weather models are readily available to the public, but here’s the catch: just glancing at them won’t yield accurate predictions, especially in mountainous regions.
An essential fact to grasp is that traditional weather models operate on a low resolution, encompassing broad grid areas that fail to capture localized phenomena. A simple observation of weather data can lead to significant errors. It wasn’t sufficient to stick to generalized models; I needed to adapt and hone in on Tahoe’s distinct conditions. My proximity to the mountains allowed me to correct common miscalculations, making my forecasts significantly more accurate.
In 2007, motivated by a desire to share my knowledge, I launched my own platform, Tahoe Weather Discussion. This became a go-to resource for ski and snow enthusiasts eager for reliable information.
Connections and Collaboration
As I built my reputation, I began to hear whispers about a fellow forecaster, Joel, based in Boulder, Colorado. Our paths had striking parallels; we were both driven by a passion for snow and storms and were building our respective forecasting websites—his focusing on Colorado, mine on Tahoe.
Joel was sleeping on a friend’s couch while running Colorado Powder Forecast. When we finally connected, he proposed a collaboration. “Let’s do it together, not against each other,” he said. However, there was a catch—he wanted my entire company in exchange for zero pay.
A Leap of Faith
Trusting him fully, I saw the potential in merging our efforts. While my colleague Evan declined the offer—hesitant to give away what he had worked hard to build—I felt that teaming up with Joel could magnify our impact.
