As the wave of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape industries globally, its impact on key tech hubs like San Francisco and Boston is already evident. However, proponents argue that the transformative power of AI will permeate workplaces across all sectors, not just the traditional technology domain. A recent report from Brookings offers a comprehensive analysis of what the researchers term “AI readiness,” highlighting significant discrepancies in how various regions are adopting AI technologies.

Brookings categorizes U.S. cities into five distinct tiers based on their preparedness for AI-related careers and industries. The methodology of this classification involves evaluating local talent development, institutional innovations, and the adoption capabilities of regional businesses.

The standout cities, dubbed "AI Superstars," are concentrated primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area—the epicenter of the AI revolution. These areas are so advanced in AI capability that they warrant their own classification. Close followers in the "Star AI Hubs" category include major urban centers such as Boston, Seattle, and Miami, all of which are recognized for their robust technology sectors.

2. Concentration of Workers and Startups Is Highly Centralized, Too

The Brookings report reveals a striking concentration of AI talent and startups in these tech hubs. An overwhelming two-thirds of professionals advertising AI competencies and skills are located in these prime cities. Further, findings indicate that over 75% of all AI startups originated in these territories.

While regions like New York City, Seattle, Columbus, Ohio, and Boulder, Colorado, also contribute to the AI landscape, it’s clear that the majority of AI advancements are emerging from a limited number of large urban areas. The report underscores that while AI activity is extending into various regional economies across the country, there’s an urgent need for policy initiatives aimed at nurturing AI growth in less concentrated regions without neglecting other parts of the nation.

These include locations surrounding prestigious academic institutions such as the University of Wisconsin in Madison and Texas A&M University in College Station. Cultural hotspots like Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Nashville also show potential.

However, these burgeoning AI hubs often lack crucial elements that can catalyze their development. For instance, Columbia, South Carolina, home to a considerable population and the University of South Carolina, is falling short in talent cultivation. The report highlights that a lower percentage of graduates are earning degrees in science and engineering, and even fewer showcase AI-related skills on their job portfolios.


By examining these insights, it becomes clear that while the vast potential of AI is recognized nationwide, disparities remain prevalent in how different regions are prepared to harness its capabilities. Encouraging a more evenly distributed growth in AI technologies across the U.S. could significantly influence the future landscape of work in every industry.
