ChatGPT’s Mobile App: A Revenue Powerhouse
Since its launch in May 2023, ChatGPT’s mobile application is making waves in the digital market, reaching an incredible milestone of $2 billion in global consumer spending. Data from app intelligence firm Appfigures highlights that this achievement is nearly 30 times the combined lifetime spending of its closest competitors in the mobile space, including Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
In 2025 alone, ChatGPT’s mobile app has generated a staggering $1.35 billion, marking a phenomenal increase of 673% from the $174 million earned in the same period last year. With the app amassing close to $193 million each month on average, it’s clear that users are increasingly willing to invest in AI solutions that enhance their daily lives.
ChatGPT’s impressive figures starkly contrast with those of its nearest rival, Grok, which reported earnings of approximately $25.6 million this year, translating to an average monthly revenue of about $3.6 million. This means that ChatGPT’s revenue is roughly 53 times higher than Grok’s, showcasing the app’s substantial market dominance. Such statistics reveal a clear gap in revenue generation, which suggests that ChatGPT holds a strong lead in consumer preferences.
While these numbers provide insights into consumer spending on mobile platforms, it’s important to recognize that they don’t fully encapsulate the financial performance of AI companies. Many organizations, including ChatGPT, offer various subscription plans on the web and generate income from API services, which can further enhance their financial standings. Nevertheless, the figures illustrate the traction ChatGPT has achieved within mobile app stores, demonstrating its popularity among consumers.
Grok’s entry into the market illustrates another trend—its initial launch in November 2023 did not include standalone iOS or Android applications. Users first accessed the Grok chatbot via the X platform. It wasn’t until early January 2025 that Grok became available as a separate app, followed by its presence on Google Play in March. This delay may have hindered Grok’s ability to compete effectively in the mobile app space from the outset.
According to Appfigures, ChatGPT has a lifetime global spending per download of $2.91, which surpasses Claude’s $2.55, Grok’s $0.75, and Copilot’s $0.28. Notably, in the United States, this figure increases to $10, revealing that the U.S. market represents a significant 38% of ChatGPT’s total revenue to date. Germany follows closely as the second-largest market, accounting for 5.3% of spending.
The app’s download numbers further cement its market leadership. ChatGPT has been installed approximately 690 million times globally, dwarfing Grok’s 39.5 million installs. This disparity puts into perspective recent criticisms from X owner Elon Musk regarding perceived favoritism in app store rankings.
Monthly download rates for ChatGPT have surged, now averaging around 45 million globally, a remarkable increase of 180% from the 16 million average during the same timeframe last year. In 2025, ChatGPT has recorded about 318 million downloads, more than double the 113 million of the previous year, showcasing its growing popularity across various regions. India leads as the top market by downloads, composing 13.7% of lifetime installations, with the U.S. contributing 10.3% to the overall total.
