In a significant step to ensure the safety of children online, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) announced plans to develop an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) tool. The Rise of Online Crime Networks
At a recent address to the National Press Club, AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett highlighted the surge in online crime networks involving young boys and men who prey on vulnerable teenage girls. These perpetrators, primarily from English-speaking backgrounds, engage in grooming behaviors, coercing their victims into committing acts of violence against themselves and even others, including pets. This disturbing trend has raised widespread concern among parents and guardians.
Understanding “Crimefluencers”
Barrett labeled these offenders as “crimefluencers,” emphasizing their motivations stem not from financial gain or sexual desire but rather from a desire for amusement and online popularity. This twisted form of entertainment has gamified sadistic behaviors, where individuals gain status within their peer groups by sharing increasingly depraved content. The chilling reality is that offenders may even exchange their victims amongst themselves in a manner akin to online gaming.
The Role of AI in Policing
To better counter these rising threats, the AFP is collaborating with Microsoft to create a prototype AI tool that can effectively navigate encrypted communications. By analyzing slang and emoticons prevalent among young users, the tool aims to identify indicators of online exploitation early on, allowing for prompt intervention to protect vulnerable youth. Commissioner Barrett emphasized the necessity of this technology to expedite the saving of children from potential harm.
Addressing Youth Radicalisation
Barrett’s address also underscored the pressing issue of youth radicalisation in Australia. In just a year, four young people have been charged with terrorism-related offenses across ten distinct investigations. Since 2020, the AFP has scrutinized 48 individuals aged 12 to 17, leading to 25 charges, further illustrating the need for ongoing vigilance against radicalization.

With findings indicating that 54% of these cases involved religious motivations, 22% were ideologically driven, and others had unclear motivations, the AFP is focused on preventing potential threats. National Security Threats
In her speech, Barrett did not shy away from addressing serious national security threats. The ongoing investigation into the arson attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue was mentioned, along with claims regarding a suspect who also allegedly engaged in multiple firebombings of tobacco shops. Barrett considered this individual a top priority for the AFP’s criminal investigations.

The agency is focusing on international cooperation, exemplified by its collaboration with Colombian law enforcement to dismantle cocaine production laboratories.
