Amazon has hundreds of thousands of robots in its warehouses, but that doesn’t mean all its robotic initiatives are a success story.
In a notable shift, Amazon has decided to halt its Blue Jay warehouse robotics project just months post-launch. This news, initially reported by Business Insider and confirmed by TechCrunch, highlights the complexities and challenges inherent in pioneering automation technologies in large-scale operations.
Unveiled in October, Blue Jay was a multi-armed robot aimed at sorting and moving packages within Amazon’s same-day delivery warehouses. During its testing phase at a facility in South Carolina, Amazon emphasized its rapid development timeline; Blue Jay took roughly a year to create, significantly shorter than previous robotic innovations. This efficiency was attributed to advancements in artificial intelligence, a crucial driving force behind many of Amazon’s automation initiatives.
Despite the initial optimism surrounding Blue Jay, the company later clarified that the robot was essentially a prototype. Amazon spokesperson Terrance Clark mentioned, “We’re always experimenting with new ways to improve the customer experience,” but the prototype did not meet operational expectations. The decision to discontinue Blue Jay suggests a shift in strategy, aiming to refine and repurpose its core technology rather than continue a project that may not have reached its intended goals.
As Amazon pivots away from the Blue Jay project, the company plans to recycle the underlying technology for application in other robotics “manipulation programs.” Employees who contributed to Blue Jay have been reassigned to different projects within the company, indicative of Amazon’s commitment to fostering innovation even when specific initiatives do not pan out as hoped.
Speaking further about their dedication to innovation, Clark stated, “We’re accelerating the use of the underlying technology developed for Blue Jay, and nearly all of the technologies are being carried over and will continue to support employees across our network.” This statement reflects a broader trend within Amazon’s operational ethos: embracing failure as an innovative way of moving forward.
In a parallel development, Amazon introduced the Vulcan robot last year, designed to optimize the functionality within warehouse storage compartments. Vulcan operates with two arms: one arm is specialized for rearranging items, while the other uses a camera and suction cups to grasp goods. Remarkably, Vulcan has the ability to “feel” objects, thanks to training on real-world interaction data, allowing for improved handling and efficiency in package management.
