As that project wrapped up, I received an unexpected yet thrilling request: to assist Pope Leo XIV in launching his first social encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, which delves into the profound implications of artificial intelligence (AI) on our understanding of what it means to be human.

The Relevance of AI in Today’s Society

In an era increasingly shaped by digital technologies, the role of AI and robotics in our social interactions and structures has never been more pertinent. These innovations bring about not only exciting opportunities but also significant challenges. The themes explored in this encyclical reflect ongoing global conversations around the impact of technology on the fabric of humanity.

Historically, the Vatican has addressed such technological questions. My research into the social teachings of popes since 1891 reveals a rich tapestry of responses to how technological advances shape societal norms. From Rerum Novarum, penned by Pope Leo XIII, which examined the industrial revolution’s impact on laborers, to modern critiques of technology, there is a clear lineage of concern within the Church regarding how these developments affect human dignity.

Bridging Dialogue: The Vatican and AI Industry

Although the Vatican’s history in addressing scientific developments has not always been smooth, recent years have seen a concerted effort to engage in meaningful dialogues with the AI sector. Initiatives such as the Minerva Dialogues, a series of closed-door conferences featuring tech leaders and theological experts, illustrate this commitment. The recent launch of Magnifica Humanitas represents a watershed moment, marking the first time a pope has directly centered AI in a papal encyclical—an unprecedented act of engagement.

I had the privilege of being part of the panel that presented this encyclical, alongside notable figures like Chris Olah, co-founder of the AI technology firm Anthropic. The convergence of theological discourse and tech expertise sparked high interest from media and the public alike. Questions on the panel’s composition highlighted the potential implications of this discussion, and the encyclical itself, as it attempts to navigate the complexities of AI while acknowledging diverse views.
