Generative artificial intelligence (AI) evokes curiosity and confusion in equal measure. Attempts to explain its functionality have led to various metaphors, from likening it to a “black box” to calling it “autocomplete on steroids.” Some even compare it to a “parrot” or a pair of “sneakers.” Each analogy aims to ground this complex technology in our everyday experiences, but often, these comparisons simplify or obscure the intricacies involved in generative AI.

The “Calculator for Words” Analogy

A metaphor that has gained traction is the comparison of generative AI to a “calculator for words.” Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, popularized this analogy, suggesting that, similar to traditional calculators used in math class, generative AI tools assist us in handling vast amounts of linguistic data. This perspective emphasizes the mathematical underpinnings of language generation.

However, the calculator analogy has its drawbacks. Unlike calculators, which don’t possess inherent biases or ethical dilemmas, generative AI can reflect underlying social biases and generate misleading or harmful content. Dismissing the calculator analogy entirely misses an essential truth: at its core, generative AI does function as a kind of word calculator.

The Practice of Calculation in Language

What truly matters in this discussion is not merely the object—be it a calculator or an AI tool—but the act of calculation itself. Generative AI mimics statistical patterns prevalent in human language, shaping its output based on various linguistic calculations. The experience of language users reveals that our interactions are often governed by statistical dependencies, even if we are unaware of them.

For example, think about the discomfort one may feel when hearing phrases like “pepper and salt” instead of the more common “salt and pepper.” Such preferences stem from the frequency with which we encounter specific sequences in everyday conversation. Linguists refer to these sequences as “collocations”—patterns that, through social exposure, dictate what sounds appropriate or natural to us.

How Chatbot Outputs “Feel Right”

One noteworthy achievement of large language models (LLMs), such as chatbots, is their ability to formalize the “feel right” factor, successfully mimicking human intuition. These models can produce sequences of language that not only pass the Turing test but can also emotionally resonate with users—sometimes leading them to develop attachments to their outputs.

LLMs like ChatGPT and Gemini derive their strength from an intricate web of statistical calculations between tokens. By mapping the meanings and relationships of words in an abstract space, these tools can generate responses that align with expected linguistic norms. They effectively systematize collocations and linguistic patterns that humans intuitively recognize.

The Linguistic Foundations of Generative AI

The advancements in generative AI are intricately tied to linguistic studies. Understanding this background is essential for appreciating the technology’s development trajectory. Early machine translation systems from the Cold War era sought merely to convert languages; however, as linguistics advanced—largely influenced by scholars like Noam Chomsky—the ambition evolved to decoding natural language processing principles.

The evolution of LLMs is a complex journey that began by attempting to mechanize linguistic rules, including grammar, and transitioned into statistical methods that calculated word sequence frequencies. Today, neural networks drive language generation, yet the underlying statistical practice remains unchanged: these systems are still grounded in probability-based calculations that determine language patterns.

What Generative AI Cannot Comprehend

Despite its impressive capabilities, generative AI does not genuinely “understand” the language it processes. This discrepancy often eludes comprehension, partly due to the terminologies companies use. Instead of terms like “calculating” to describe their operations, they use phrases like “thinking,” “reasoning,” or even “dreaming.” These notions may falsely suggest that generative AI has a grasp of the values and meanings embedded in language.

For instance, while an AI can deduce that “I” and “you” co-occur frequently with “love,” it does not possess the concept of “I” or “you,” nor does it have an understanding of the concept of “love.” It merely executes calculations devoid of true comprehension.

In essence, generative AI’s operation is fundamentally a task of calculation, often muddled by misleading language that implies a deeper level of understanding than exists. Recognizing this distinction is crucial for both developers and users to navigate the complexities and limitations of generative AI tools effectively.
