The Impact of AI on Work: Will It Free Us or Keep Us Working Longer?

Technological progress has progressively shouldered more tasks previously handled by humans. From washing machines that clean our clothes to tractors that plough fields, innovations have dramatically transformed daily life. In industrialized nations, economic growth and wealth redistribution have meant that many workers no longer need to engage in grueling 12-hour workdays, a norm in the 19th century. But as we stand at the cusp of a new era defined by artificial intelligence (AI), a pressing question emerges: will these advancements grant us even more free time?

The Unforeseen Consequences of AI Integration

Surprisingly, AI may not lead to a reduction in working hours. In fact, there is a real possibility that it could cause working hours to increase. A fundamental reason for this trend revolves around the bargaining power of workers in the face of potential job automation.

When employees perceive their jobs as vulnerable to AI threats, they may feel compelled to increase their productivity to demonstrate their value. This self-preservation instinct often results in longer hours, as workers toil to convince employers of their continued worth in a rapidly changing job market.

The Rat Race Reinvented

My research into what I call the “rat race” suggests that this is an expected reaction. Employers constantly make decisions about hiring, promotions, or layoffs based on productivity metrics. However, measuring real productivity can be complicated, leading companies to use simpler, often time-based metrics. It’s straightforward for employers to note who is the last to leave the office, rather than assess the quality and impact of contributions on complex projects.

In this scenario, workers who put in more hours may see themselves as more valuable, but when the entire workforce adopts this strategy, the outcome becomes self-defeating. Everyone ends up working longer but without a clear competitive edge.

AI and The Intensification of Work

The introduction of AI can amplify these effects significantly. Existing AI technologies have already automated routine tasks, leading to widespread expectations that entire roles could soon be rendered obsolete. This looming reality heightens stress levels among employees, compelling them to work longer hours to safeguard their positions. A recent study highlighted that workers in sectors likely to be affected by AI, like financial services and IT, are literally switching off their office lights later than their peers in less exposed industries.

Employers’ Misconceptions about Productivity

Another complication arises from the common misconception among employers that AI will substantially enhance worker productivity. While AI tools have the potential to improve efficiency, overestimation of these capabilities can lead to unrealistic demands. When employers expect individuals to accomplish more within the same time frames, this often results in intensified workloads and extended hours instead of creating a more balanced work environment.

The Friction of New Technologies

Moreover, adopting AI brings an array of challenges that add to the pressures facing workers. As established routines get upended and new roles implementing AI take shape, employees must adapt to continuously improving tools and technologies. This rapid evolution not only complicates workflows but also demands significant time and effort for training, further stretching workers’ hours.

The Reality of Overwork and Burnout

It is a sobering thought that instead of relieving us from laborious tasks, AI might inadvertently deepen the struggles associated with overwork and burnout. However, this scenario is not inevitable.

A Paradigm Shift in AI Design

For the potential of AI to be realized in a way that positively impacts work-life balance, the future direction of its design and implementation must rise above the control of employers and large tech companies. Theoretically, it is entirely plausible to design AI in ways that bolster workers’ skills, enhancing their expertise and amplifying their bargaining power.

An empowered workforce has the opportunity to advocate for better working conditions, including flexible schedules tailored to individual preferences. By prioritizing augmentation and empowerment in the development of AI, we can harness its capabilities as a potent tool to alleviate the growing discontent in our work lives.

As we explore the relationship between AI and work dynamics, it’s crucial to recognize the complex interplay of economic, social, and technological factors. Understanding these nuances can pave the way for thoughtful discussions on creating a more equitable and satisfying work environment in the future.
