WhatsApp is stepping up its game in the fight against online scams with the introduction of Scam Alert, an optional feature currently in limited beta testing. This innovative tool employs on-device machine learning to identify potential scam messages, raising awareness and providing users with the necessary tools to distinguish trusted conversations from dubious ones.

How Does Scam Alert Work?

Once activated, the Scam Alert feature downloads a compact machine learning model directly to the user’s device. This model assesses incoming messages from non-contacts by analyzing their conversational structure and linguistic signals. Importantly, the entire classification process occurs on the device itself, protecting user privacy by keeping message content secure and preventing exposure to third-party servers.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has trained this model using patterns identified in scam conversations reported by users in the past. If the model detects a message that resembles a known scam, it displays a discreet warning to the user—this alert is not visible to the sender, allowing users to take action without alerting potential scammers.

Features of Scam Alert

  1. User Control and Flexibility: When users receive a message flagged as a potential scam, they have several options. They can choose to block, report, or continue the conversation, providing users with agency over how they handle potentially suspicious messages. Additionally, users can mark a conversation as trusted, ensuring Scam Alert does not flag it in the future.

  2. Feedback for Improvement: To enhance the efficacy of the Scam Alert feature, users have the option to share the five most recent messages they’ve received from a trusted chat back to WhatsApp. This feedback loop supports continual model improvement and better identification of scam patterns.

Behind the Technology: Confidential Federated Analytics

The architecture of Scam Alert diverges from traditional methods of message classification. Utilizing Confidential Federated Analytics, WhatsApp separates message classification from performance measurement. Here’s how it works:

  • Local Aggregation: Messages and warning event metrics are aggregated locally, meaning sensitive information isn’t transmitted to servers.
  • Privacy Measures: WhatsApp employs an Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) relay for data transmission, adding another layer of anonymity and security.
  • Confidential Virtual Machines: Metrics are processed inside secure environments called confidential virtual machines, which ensure safe handling of private user data.

With this approach, WhatsApp not only prioritizes user safety but also fortifies trust, paving the way for a more secure messaging experience.

WhatsApp’s Scam Alert feature is not alone in the quest to enhance user safety. Google Messages has also rolled out functionality aimed at real-time spam protection using privacy-focused detection mechanisms. However, the designs of these systems vary, particularly in how message detection and spam filtering are implemented. While Google manages some degree of processing through its services, WhatsApp’s approach prioritizes on-device processing.

Stephanie Lio, Head of AI Product Marketing at WhatsApp, highlighted the uniqueness of the Scam Alert feature, emphasizing that it operates solely on-device. This architecture ensures that users remain in control of their data, negating automatic reporting and preserving privacy.

Ongoing Testing and Bug Bounty Program

The limited beta phase of Scam Alert allows WhatsApp and its Bug Bounty community to thoroughly test the feature before wider availability. There’s also an expansion of the Bug Bounty program to encompass the confidential federated analytics pipeline, which is crucial for maintaining system integrity. Meta plans to release components related to the confidential virtual machines for independent security evaluation, further enhancing trust and transparency.


WhatsApp’s Scam Alert is setting a new standard in safeguarding users against online scams while prioritizing privacy and user control. As this feature evolves, it could redefine how messaging platforms approach security in an increasingly digital world.
