Perplexity has unveiled an innovative feature for its Pro subscribers called Perplexity Labs, a groundbreaking tool designed to push the boundaries of what generative AI can accomplish. This new addition represents a significant shift from traditional search-based interactions, moving towards structured, multi-step workflows tailored for more complex tasks.

What is Perplexity Labs?

Perplexity Labs allows users to tackle a wide array of challenges, from generating comprehensive reports and analyzing vast amounts of data to writing and executing code and even building lightweight web applications—all within a single, user-friendly interface. The functionality is accessed via a new mode selector, which is available across both web and mobile platforms, with desktop support expected soon.

The Unique Functionality of Perplexity Labs

Unlike Perplexity Search, which is designed for succinct answers, or the recently rebranded Research (formerly known as Deep Research), Labs is specifically tailored for users who demand finished outputs. The tasks you can accomplish within Labs range from creating formatted spreadsheets and rich visualizations to interactive dashboards and basic web tools.

Features that Empower Users

Each Lab within the platform contains an Assets tab. This feature allows users to view or download all generated materials, such as charts, images, CSV files, and snippets of code. Some Labs also include an App tab, enabling users to render basic web applications right within their project environment, streamlining the workflow and enhancing productivity.

Aravind Srinivas, CEO and co-founder of Perplexity, highlights the diverse functionalities that Labs enables, stating that users can carry out much more complicated tasks, such as building trading strategies or storyboards, all while accessing a directory of generated assets.

Despite its promise, some users have raised concerns regarding the platform’s limitations, especially in handling follow-up interactions and code revisions. As one Reddit user succinctly put it, “The biggest problem with Labs is that it doesn’t handle follow-ups very well. It basically requires you to be a one-shotting ninja.” This feedback highlights the need for future updates to enhance the interactivity and adaptability of the Labs feature.

The New Terminology

In line with the new feature rollout, Perplexity has also standardized its terminology, renaming "Deep Research" to simply "Research." This decision was made to clarify the distinctions between the three core modes: Search, Research, and Labs, making it more intuitive for users as they navigate the platform.

Perplexity Labs is now live and available exclusively to Pro users. For those looking to dive in, the platform includes a Projects Gallery filled with examples and practical use cases designed to help users embark on their new task-oriented journey.
