Since around 2010, the company’s proprietary sharding logic involved approximately 1,000 shards and an incredible 425 terabytes of data. This setup allowed Etsy to handle an impressive 1.7 million requests per second.

Etsy accessed MySQL through an internal Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) layer that mapped each database table to a corresponding model. A unique identifier, known as the shardifier ID, was instrumental in determining which shard was responsible for storing each record. However, given the unique sharding keys—like shop_id and user_id—and the use of more than 30 distinct IDs, maintainability and scalability became increasingly cumbersome.

Developers faced challenges like slow scaling operations and the risk of having a single point of failure due to the “index” database that housed record-to-shard mappings. To overcome these issues, Etsy decided to transition to Vitess, a powerful open-source database clustering system designed for scaling MySQL horizontally.

Vitess serves as a comprehensive solution designed to enhance MySQL’s capabilities, primarily through sharding and connection pooling. Initially introduced as a layer between the ORM and the database, Vitess smartly routes queries while allowing the ORM to specify the targeted shard.

One of the most vital components of Vitess is the vindex system, which determines how application data maps to database shards, thereby influencing query routing. By utilizing vindexes, Etsy aimed to simplify shard management and bolster the overall health of their database architecture.

Ella Yarmo-Gray, a senior software engineer at Etsy, highlighted the main challenge during migration: Etsy’s existing ORM shard mappings were random and non-algorithmic. The thought of moving to an out-of-the-box vindex system raised concerns. Such a shift would necessitate a comprehensive re-sharding of all existing data—an undertaking that could last several years and risk numerous complications.

To address this, Etsy’s team opted for the creation of custom vindexes that allowed them to port over existing shard logic into Vitess. This strategic approach enabled the engineering team to test the functionality of vindexes in their environment without the immediate complexities and risks associated with moving vast amounts of data.

The Migration Process: A Step-by-Step Approach

The migration to Vitess was no small feat. It required meticulous planning and a series of thoughtful redesigns in the data model to accommodate improved sharding practices. Steps included:

  1. Redesign of Data Model: Engineers had to streamline their current data models to support better sharding strategies.
  2. Selecting a Shard Key: Identifying an effective shard key was crucial to ensuring data was distributed efficiently.
  3. Gradual Traffic Migration: Traffic moves were executed slowly while maintaining constant checks on data consistency to ensure nothing was lost during this complex transition.

A testament to their hard work and dedication, Etsy’s engineering team invested about five years in the process, culminating in around 2,500 pull requests and 6,000 queries!

Documenting the Migration Journey

The journey of moving to Vitess wasn’t just a technical achievement; it served as a learning experience as well. Etsy engineers have documented their experiences in a series of insightful articles titled “Sharding Payments with Vitess.” These publications detail the intricate migration aspects for their payments platform. By sharing their lessons learned, they aim to assist other engineering teams facing similar transitions, outlining challenges encountered, adjustments made to data models, and evaluating risks associated with the migration.


Etsy’s gradual and strategic migration to Vitess provides an exemplary roadmap for other organizations looking to modernize and scale their database infrastructures. The successful management of a complex codebase underscores the importance of adaptability and foresight in today’s rapidly-evolving digital landscape.
