NVIDIA and NSF: Pioneering AI for Scientific Research Excellence

NVIDIA has joined forces with the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) to usher in a new era of scientific research through Artificial Intelligence (AI). This groundbreaking partnership is set to enhance the development of multimodal language models, ultimately transforming how scientific inquiries are conducted across America.

The Open Multimodal AI Infrastructure to Accelerate Science (OMAI)

The centerpiece of this collaboration is the Open Multimodal AI Infrastructure to Accelerate Science (OMAI) project, part of the NSF’s Mid-Scale Research Infrastructure program. By merging cutting-edge AI technologies with scientific methodologies, OMAI aims to create a robust national ecosystem that supports scientific discovery while advancing AI research itself.

“Bringing AI into scientific research has been a game changer,” stated Brian Stone, who is currently performing the duties of the NSF director. This initiative not only seeks to promote innovation but also aims to secure the United States’ global leadership in science and technology, tackling challenges that have long been deemed insurmountable.

NVIDIA’s Role in OMAI

NVIDIA is set to play a critical role by providing advanced NVIDIA HGX B300 systems, renowned for their unmatched efficiency in accelerating model training and inference. These state-of-the-art AI infrastructures, outfitted with Blackwell Ultra GPUs, feature high-bandwidth memory and interconnect technologies capable of managing the most demanding workloads.

NVIDIA’s AI Enterprise software platform further enhances OMAI, enabling researchers to turn vast datasets into meaningful insights and innovations. Jensen Huang, the founder and CEO of NVIDIA, proclaimed, “AI is the engine of modern science — and large, open models for America’s researchers will ignite the next industrial revolution.”

This substantial investment in technology will also benefit research teams from prestigious institutions such as the University of Washington, University of Hawaii at Hilo, University of New Hampshire, and University of New Mexico. By nurturing a public-private partnership, this initiative aligns with the White House AI Action Plan, which aims to ensure America’s dominance in the global AI landscape.

Noah Smith, senior director of natural language processing research at Ai2, emphasized NVIDIA’s pivotal role in this initiative, stating, “We can’t build the models without compute, and that’s why NVIDIA is so important to this project.”

Opening the Gates to Multimodal Language Models

Today’s large language models (LLMs) are not just advanced algorithms; they contain billions of parameters learned from vast amounts of data. These multimodal LLMs can process images, graphs, and tables, allowing researchers to extract and analyze information from unprecedented sources. However, the best models often remain inaccessible due to restrictive licenses and the unavailability of training data.

In response to these barriers, NVIDIA and NSF are committed to providing fully open access to model data, open-source interrogation tools, and detailed documentation. This initiative specifically aims to empower early-career researchers and democratize access to transformative resources.

"Our aim is to make the software and models available at low or zero cost to researchers," said Smith. This reflects the broader shift towards open-source code repositories and science-oriented digital libraries, a move that promises to maximize accessibility and collaborative research.

Aligning with National Priorities in AI

The OMAI initiative is closely aligned with the White House’s AI Action Plan, which plans to expedite federal permitting for data center infrastructures and promote the export of American-made AI technologies. This strategic alignment underscores a commitment to not only enhancing AI-enabled scientific research but also fostering an ecosystem where leading open models can flourish.

By focusing on building leading-edge open models to enhance academic research and education, this partnership between NVIDIA, NSF, and Ai2 heralds a new chapter in America’s quest for AI-based scientific advancements.
