NVIDIA and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) are embarking on a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at advancing sovereign AI for European public service media. This initiative was unveiled at NVIDIA’s GTC Paris during the VivaTech conference, signaling a significant step forward in providing the media industry with access to state-of-the-art cloud and AI technologies.
At the heart of this partnership lies a shared vision of enhancing the media landscape across Europe. The EBU, which represents over 110 member organizations in more than 50 countries and reaches an audience of over one billion people, is committed to creating frameworks that ensure sovereign AI technologies are developed and governed according to European values and policies.
Sovereign AI is more than a technological advance; it embodies a commitment to cultural identity and local governance in artificial intelligence. By fostering this framework, European nations aim to develop localized AI infrastructure and expertise, thereby enhancing public trust and nurturing innovation that is reflective of regional needs and values.
Michael Eberhard, chief technology officer of public broadcaster ARD/SWR and chair of the EBU Technical Committee, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration. “By advancing these capabilities together, we’re helping ensure that powerful, compliant and accessible media services are made available to all EBU members,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of innovation, resilience, and autonomy in today’s media landscape.
Empowering Media Innovation in Europe
NVIDIA and the EBU are dedicated to establishing frameworks that prioritize independence and public trust in AI technologies. The synergy of their efforts is set to foster an environment where artificial intelligence serves the interests of European citizens while preserving the autonomy of media organizations.
One of the key components of this collaboration is the development of hybrid cloud architectures designed specifically for European public service media. The EBU will leverage its Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) and Media eXchange Layer (MXL) architectures to enable interoperability and scalability. This will lead to more cost-effective and energy-efficient AI training and inference, promoting open-source principles that ensure an accessible, dynamic technology ecosystem.
Moreover, the collaboration aims to equip public service media companies with advanced tools to deliver personalized and contextually relevant services. Emphasizing transparency, accountability, and cultural identity, these enhancements will utilize sovereign cloud and AI infrastructure, NVIDIA AI Enterprise, custom foundation models, and large language models trained on localized data.
Understanding the need for an AI-ready workforce, NVIDIA is also opening resources from its Deep Learning Institute to provide comprehensive training programs for European media organizations. This investment aligns with the EBU’s mission to maintain news integrity in an AI-driven era.
Partnering With Public Service Media for Sovereign Cloud and AI
The development of standards and best practices within the media sector is crucial for fostering comprehensive sovereign cloud and AI solutions. NVIDIA and the EBU recognize the importance of collaboration in this space, engaging a diverse range of stakeholders including independent software vendors, data center providers, and cloud service suppliers.
Through this collaborative approach, discussions between the cloud and AI industry and European regulators will be enhanced, paving the way for solutions that cater to public and organizational needs alike.
Antonio Arcidiacono, chief technology and innovation officer at the EBU, underscored the significance of this cooperative effort. “Building sovereign cloud and AI capabilities requires strong cross-industry collaboration,” he noted, highlighting the commitment to fostering a foundation of trust, innovation, and resilience for the growth of European media.
