Utilizing the Baby Facial Action Coding System, the algorithm is retrained to recognize faster flickers of expression, which are common in neonates.

Despite its impressive results, the integration of facial-analysis AI raises important concerns. Historically, such technology has faced scrutiny regarding skin-tone bias and misinterpretations of facial expressions that may indicate nausea or fear rather than pain.
