In their experiments, the authors evaluated two well-known models: Qwen3 VL with 32 billion parameters and Mistral Small 3.1 with 24 billion parameters. The results were compelling. With Qwen3 VL, the study recorded an impressive score of 58.3 on the MMLongBenchDoc benchmark, surpassing the performance of the much larger Qwen3 VL 235B A22B model, which achieved a score of 57.0. Additionally, one notable observation is that internalized reasoning led to models producing 12.4 times fewer mean output tokens compared to explicit reasoning.
