  • Instructions: A system message dictating general rules for the agent, including coding standards.
  • Tools: A list of Managed Code Platform (MCP) servers the agent can utilize.
  • Input: Various data types, such as text, images, and file inputs like AGENTS.md and local environment information.

All these components are packaged into a JSON object before being sent to the Responses API.

Some events may prompt the agent to call a tool, while others may provide reasoning steps as part of the response. Both tool calls and reasoning outputs are appended to the prompt and subsequently sent back to the LLM for further iterations. This inner loop continues until a ‘done’ event, which includes a user-facing response, is returned from the LLM.

Addressing LLM Inference Performance

One significant hurdle faced by the Codex CLI is the performance of LLM inference. Each round of conversation can lead to a quadratic increase in the amount of JSON sent to the Responses API. This is where prompt caching plays a pivotal role. By reusing previous inference outputs, the Codex CLI can streamline performance from quadratic to linear, enhancing speed and efficiency.

However, managing the cache is delicate. Altering the list of tools will invalidate the cache, and early implementations of Codex CLI faced challenges related to inconsistent tool enumeration, resulting in cache misses.

Utilizing Compaction for Efficiency

To further optimize performance, Codex CLI employs a technique known as compaction. Once a conversation surpasses a certain token limit, the agent calls a specialized endpoint within the Responses API. This endpoint delivers a more succinct representation of the conversation, significantly reducing the amount of text in the LLM context.
