Yann LeCun Launches New AI Startup: Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI)
On Thursday, renowned AI scientist Yann LeCun confirmed the launch of his new startup, Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI). Although this was one of the worst-kept secrets in the tech world, it marked an exciting new chapter in AI innovation. While LeCun takes on the role of Executive Chairman, he announced that Alex LeBrun, co-founder and CEO of the successful medical transcription AI startup Narla, will lead AMI as its new CEO.
In a post on LinkedIn, LeCun stated, “Yes, AMI Labs is my new startup. I’m the Executive Chairman, and Alex LeBrun is transitioning from CEO of Nabla to CEO of AMI Labs!” This leadership shift highlights the growing trend of AI experts stepping into new roles to push the bounds of technological advancement.
AMI Labs is reportedly seeking to raise €500 million (around $586 million) at an ambitious €3 billion valuation (approximately $3.5 billion) even before its official launch. This kind of valuation may raise eyebrows, but given the current climate of venture capital investments in AI startups spearheaded by industry luminaries, it’s certainly within the realm of expectation. For perspective, the former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati secured a valuation of $12 billion for her startup, Thinking Machines Lab, during its seed round last year—an impressive feat that underscores the significance of credibility in this fierce arena.
LeCun, who holds a professor position at New York University and previously served as VP and Chief AI Scientist at Meta, is celebrated for his groundbreaking work in reinforcement learning, earning him the prestigious A.M. Turing Award. This accolade speaks volumes about his expertise in the field, further validating the exciting prospects for AMI Labs.
A significant aspect of AMI Labs is its focus on world model AI, a fresh alternative to traditional large language models (LLMs). The concept revolves around AI systems that can comprehend and simulate their surroundings, essentially enabling them to predict various outcomes based on causal relationships. This approach is seen as a potential remedy for the structural hallucination issues inherent in LLMs, which, due to their non-deterministic nature, can fabricate information. The need for more reliable AI systems is palpable, and AMI looks to meet that demand.

As AMI Labs gears up for its foray into an increasingly competitive landscape, it will enter a space that already has heavyweights such as Google DeepMind and World Labs, founded by Fei-Fei Li. The fundraising targets for AMI may appear aggressive, especially when compared to World Labs, which raised $230 million at a $1 billion valuation shortly after its launch in August 2024. However, considering the rapid developments in AI technology over the last few years, this ambition may well be warranted.
In the meantime, Nabla, the startup LeBrun is departing from, is now searching for a new CEO. Until a replacement is found, co-founder and COO Delphine Groll will oversee the operations. Nabla has confirmed its intention to partner with AMI for leveraging its models as they are developed—a strategic move that could bolster Nabla’s offerings significantly.
Nabla itself has gained considerable traction in the industry, having raised approximately $120 million from prominent backers, including a $70 million Series C round secured in June. LeCun has been a significant investor in Nabla, alongside names like Tony Fadell, HV Capital, Highland Europe, and Cathay Innovation.
LeBrun’s departure from Nabla may appear strategic, given his extensive background in multimodal AI development. His experience spans from his time at Nuance Communications, where he contributed to the tech behind Apple’s early Siri, to running Facebook’s AI division before co-founding Nabla in 2018. In announcing his new role at AMI, LeBrun noted that Nabla continues to see significant growth, projecting an annual recurring revenue (ARR) increase to nearly $1 billion—a testament to his leadership and the startup’s potential.
LeBrun’s transition reflects a growing trend among innovative leaders in the AI space. His promise to remain on as chairman and chief AI scientist at Nabla ensures continuity in leadership during this critical phase. As both AMI Labs and Nabla move forward, the intersection of innovative leadership and cutting-edge technology aims to redefine what’s possible in the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
