Anaerobic digesters are covered vessels that redirect manure away from open lagoons. In these digesters, microbes decompose the sludge in an oxygen-free environment, capturing the resulting biogas. This biogas can then be transformed into natural gas, which has a variety of applications. For instance, it can be injected into natural gas pipelines, used to fuel vehicles, or converted into electricity through power generation.

Bridging the Gap: How LCFS Credits Work

Once farmers convert methane into usable energy through anaerobic digesters, they generate Low Carbon Fuel Standard credits. Petroleum companies looking to comply with California’s stringent regulations can buy these credits to offset the emissions produced by their fuels. This system creates a financial incentive for farmers to adopt cleaner waste management practices while also benefiting large fuel producers struggling to meet LCFS requirements.

Though burning biogas in vehicles or power plants releases carbon dioxide, the process also leads to a net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in two critical ways. According to Aaron Smith, an economist at UC Berkeley, the LCFS credits system offers a significant impact: “Adding one average biogas-powered vehicle to the fleet would produce enough LCFS credits to cover the deficits incurred by 26 similar gasoline-powered vehicles.” This showcases the potential for biogas to not only mitigate emissions but also fundamentally change the transportation landscape.

The Complexity of Carbon Measurement

Despite the promising approach, there’s an underlying complexity in the carbon math involved. California’s regulatory framework assumes that methane is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. However, this assessment simplifies the reality of methane’s lifespan in the atmosphere.

The Lifespan of Methane vs. Carbon Dioxide

Methane is indeed a powerful greenhouse gas, but it has a much shorter atmospheric lifespan, typically breaking down within a couple of decades. On the other hand, carbon dioxide accumulates in the atmosphere for hundreds to thousands of years, contributing to long-term global warming. This difference complicates the effectiveness of credits based solely on reducing methane emissions.
