What Has the DSA Achieved So Far?
During the hearing, Prabhat Agarwal, who leads DSA enforcement at the European Commission, highlighted significant achievements resulting from the DSA. He noted that there is “good evidence” indicating that child protection measures have been substantially enhanced due to the DSA’s regulations. Agarwal emphasized that these measures would likely not have been implemented without the DSA, marking a significant victory for child safety online.
In addressing the quality of risk assessment reports submitted by tech companies, Agarwal acknowledged the variable nature of these reports but expressed optimism. He remarked, “The good news is every company has made a good effort,” indicating that the methodologies employed in these assessments are globally sound. While he acknowledged the need for improvements in quality and detail, he underscored that these reports provide a foundational level of transparency regarding how platforms assess and mitigate risks.
US Pressure Will Not Hinder DSA Enforcement
Agarwal also addressed concerns regarding potential pressure from the United States, particularly threats of trade tariffs. He reassured stakeholders that the European Commission remains “undeterred” in its enforcement actions. While open to dialogue with U.S. authorities, Agarwal firmly stated, “We are steadfast in enforcing our own laws.” He emphasized that the DSA enforcement efforts are expanding, and the Commission is enhancing its powers rather than slowing down.
