The authors constructed a comprehensive dataset consisting of 32,000 multiple-choice samples to evaluate the model’s performance. This dataset serves as a pivotal resource for training and benchmarking the model against existing audio-language models.

Methodology: Two-Stage Fine-Tuning

The researchers adopted a two-stage fine-tuning regimen that consists of supervised learning on both structured and unstructured chains of thought, followed by curriculum-guided GRPO. This dual approach allows the model to develop a nuanced understanding of reasoning processes. By comparing implicit versus explicit reasoning and structured versus free-form reasoning, the researchers could identify which methods yielded the best results under identical architectural conditions.

Key Findings: Enhanced Accuracy and Performance

The implementation of SARI resulted in a remarkable 16.35% increase in average accuracy compared to the baseline model, Qwen2-Audio-7B-Instruct. Notably, a variant of SARI built upon Qwen2.5-Omni achieved a state-of-the-art accuracy of 67.08% on the MMAU test-mini benchmark. These impressive results underscore the effectiveness of structured reasoning in audio-language contexts.
