Recently launched, FunctionGemma has emerged from the versatile Gemma 3 270M model, gaining robust native function call capabilities in direct response to developer feedback. FunctionGemma’s architecture enables efficient operation on resource-constrained devices, including mobile phones and NVIDIA Jetson Nano. By employing a 256k vocabulary tailored for quick tokenization of JSON and multilingual inputs, the model enhances user experiences while minimizing resource consumption. This efficiency makes it an excellent choice for developers targeting mobile and edge computing applications.

Unified Action and Chat Functionality

One standout feature of FunctionGemma is its “unified action and chat” capability. It can generate structured code and function calls to execute tasks and then effortlessly switch back to natural language for user interactions.   • Mobile Actions: This feature allows users to issue natural language commands such as, “Create a calendar event for lunch tomorrow,” “Add John to my contacts,” or “Turn on the flashlight.” FunctionGemma maps these commands to corresponding OS-level tool calls, making interactions intuitive and efficient.
  • TinyGarden: In this interactive voice-controlled game, players can plant and water crops through commands like “Plant sunflowers in the top row and water them.” The model breaks down these complex commands into specific function calls, such as plantCrop and waterCrop, with designated targets.
  • Physics Playground: This interactive demo showcases FunctionGemma’s ability to process natural language instructions for controlling simulation actions within a physics puzzle game. Utilizing Transformer.js, it demonstrates seamless client-side JavaScript integration.
