This dataset comprises 6.8K social media posts and 40K toxicity annotations across various identity groups. By doing so, MODELCITIZENS embraces a broader spectrum of perspectives, allowing for a more nuanced understanding of what toxicity entails for different communities. Each annotation reflects the unique concerns and cultural considerations of the specific group it represents, making this dataset a pivotal resource for researchers and developers.

Contextualizing Toxicity in Conversations

Recognizing the significance of conversational context, the MODELCITIZENS dataset includes posts augmented with LLM-generated conversational scenarios. This addition allows researchers to explore how context shifts the interpretation of language in social media posts. By incorporating these nuanced situations, the dataset not only enhances the reliability of toxicity detection but also enriches our understanding of online interactions.

Performance Insights: A Comparison of Detection Tools

Initial evaluations reveal that state-of-the-art toxicity detection tools, including the OpenAI Moderation API and GPT-o4-mini, encounter significant challenges when applied to the MODELCITIZENS dataset. Particularly concerning is their performance on context-augmented posts, which underscores the necessity for models that accommodate varying conversational dynamics.
