The collaboration aims to optimize transformer performance on AMD’s cutting-edge CPUs and GPUs, delivering enhanced capabilities for the Hugging Face community. As demand for AI solutions grows, this partnership is strategically positioned to address the limitations in deep learning hardware and the escalating concerns around pricing and supply.

Supported Hardware Platforms

One of the standout features of this partnership is the focus on advanced hardware platforms. On the GPU front, Hugging Face and AMD will initially work with the enterprise-grade Instinct MI2xx and MI3xx families, along with the customer-grade Radeon Navi3x series. Initial testing has shown promising results, with AMD’s MI250 reportedly training BERT-Large 1.2x faster and GPT2-Large 1.4x faster than its closest competitors.

Moreover, the collaboration extends to CPU optimizations, focusing on both AMD’s Ryzen and EPYC processors. These CPUs can be excellent choices for transformer inference, particularly when paired with model compression techniques like quantization. Additionally, the partnership will explore the capabilities of the Alveo V70 AI accelerator, known for delivering exceptional performance with reduced power consumption.

Supported Model Architectures and Frameworks

Hugging Face and AMD are committed to supporting a variety of state-of-the-art transformer architectures across multiple domains, including natural language processing, computer vision, and speech recognition. This encompasses models like BERT, DistilBERT, ROBERTA, Vision Transformer, CLIP, and Wav2Vec2. Furthermore, generative AI models such as GPT2, GPT-NeoX, T5, OPT, and LLaMA will also be part of this extensive offering, including Hugging Face’s own BLOOM and StarCoder models.

Hugging Face will collaborate closely with AMD’s engineering team to optimize key models, leveraging the latest features of AMD’s hardware and software. This includes integrating the AMD ROCm SDK into Hugging Face’s open-source libraries, starting with their transformers library.

As the collaboration progresses, there will be continuous identification of opportunities for further optimization in training and inference processes. Hugging Face anticipates that this partnership will culminate in the development of a new Optimum library specifically tailored for AMD platforms, enabling users to leverage these advancements with minimal coding adjustments.
